Fuji Excursion train from Shinjuku to Fujisan Station and Kawaguchiko

The Fuji Excursion is a JR East and Fujikyu limited express from Shinjuku to Fujisan Station and Kawaguchiko with no change. Four to five trains run each way daily, taking about 1 h 55. Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko costs ¥4,200. JR Pass holders pay ¥1,770 for the Fujikyu section.

The Fuji Excursion (富士回遊, Fuji Kaiyu) is the only limited express that runs from central Tokyo to Mt Fuji without a change. JR East and Fujikyu Railway run it jointly from Shinjuku to Fujisan Station and Kawaguchiko. Four trains run each way every day, five on seasonal dates, and the fastest takes 1 hour 53 to Kawaguchiko. The fare from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko is ¥4,200. With a JR Pass you pay only the Fujikyu section, ¥1,770.

All figures below were checked in October 2026 on Fujikyu Railway’s Fuji Excursion page, which carries the timetable valid from 14 March 2026. JR East’s own Fuji Excursion pages would not load for us, so confirm on JR East’s booking site when you buy.

Route and stops

The train leaves Shinjuku coupled to an “Azusa” or “Kaiji” limited express on the JR Chuo Line. At Otsuki the Fuji Excursion cars split off and climb the Fujikyu Line, 26.6 km and about 500 m of height, to Kawaguchiko. A few trains start from Chiba.

Stops: Shinjuku, Tachikawa, Hachioji, Otsuki, Tsuru Bunka Daigaku-mae, Shimoyoshida, Mt. Fuji (Fujisan Station), Fujikyu Highland, Kawaguchiko.

Shimoyoshida is the station for the Chureito Pagoda in Arakurayama Sengen Park. Fujikyu Highland is the stop for Fuji-Q Highland.

Seats and reservations

Fujikyu’s page says plainly that the Fuji Excursion has no unreserved seats. When you buy the limited express ticket you choose one of two kinds:

  • A reserved seat ticket, for a named train and seat
  • What Fujikyu calls an “unreserved seat ticket”, which fixes only the date and section, not the seat

Fujikyu doesn’t explain how the second kind works on board, so book a seat. You need the basic fare ticket as well as the limited express ticket.

Tickets go on sale one month before the travel date. Buy them at JR East ticket offices (Midori no Madoguchi), JR East reserved-seat machines, travel agencies, Ekinet, or JR-EAST Train Reservation, the English booking site for overseas visitors. Fujikyu stations (Kawaguchiko, Fujikyu Highland, Fujisan, Shimoyoshida, Tsuru Bunka Daigaku) also sell them. Neither operator publishes how quickly seats sell out.

Two rules help on the Fuji side. For a ride only within the Fujikyu Line, the express ticket has no seat number. And between Kawaguchiko and Fujisan Station, a regular ticket is enough to use any free seat.

JR Pass and other passes

The Japan Rail Pass site lists the Fuji Excursion with Otsuki to Kawaguchiko as the section that needs separate fares, on the Fujikyu Railway. In practice:

  • Shinjuku to Otsuki: covered, and a reserved seat costs nothing extra
  • Otsuki to Fujisan Station: ¥1,100 fare plus ¥600 limited express charge, ¥1,700
  • Otsuki to Kawaguchiko: ¥1,170 plus ¥600, ¥1,770

Source: JAPAN RAIL PASS scope of validity and Fujikyu’s fare tables, checked October 2026.

Fujikyu’s Mt. Fuji All-Inclusive Ticket (¥3,000, one day) covers the Fujikyu Line between Kawaguchiko and Shimoyoshida plus the local sightseeing buses, but the Fuji Excursion’s express charge is extra.

Fujisan Station

Fujisan Station is in Fujiyoshida, two stops short of Kawaguchiko. Fujikyu’s English pages call it Mt. Fuji Station. It is the better stop for Lake Yamanaka and Oshino Hakkai: Fujikyu buses run from here to Oshino and the lake, and on the timetable the bus to Asahigaoka on Lake Yamanaka takes about 30 minutes. The Fujikko area bus pass (¥1,800 for a day) is sold here from 8:50 to 17:00.

The highway buses from Shinjuku also call at Fujisan Station, 38 times a day in October 2026, so you can take the train out and the bus back, or the reverse.

Kawaguchiko Station

The last stop is the hub for the western lakes. Fujikyu’s sightseeing loops (the Red, Green and Blue Lines) leave from here for Lake Kawaguchi, Saiko and Motosuko, and so does the Fujikko-go loop to Fujiyoshida, Oshino Hakkai and Lake Yamanaka. The bus ticket window is open from 6:30 to 19:00, and it sells the Fujikko area pass and highway bus tickets back to Tokyo. For what to see on foot, read our Lake Kawaguchiko guide.

Other trains from Tokyo

Without the Fuji Excursion, ride JR to Otsuki and change to the Fujikyu Line. The Fujisan View Express runs Otsuki to Kawaguchiko in about 45 minutes; it needs an express ticket, and reserved seats cost ¥200 more. Two late JR local trains also run through from Tokyo Station to Kawaguchiko every evening (18:06 and 19:04 on weekdays). They stop everywhere, but you stay in your seat all the way.

Train or bus?

The bus is cheaper and more frequent. The Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko highway bus costs ¥2,200 (¥2,000 online) and ran 56 times a day in October 2026, against four or five trains. Take the Fuji Excursion if you have a JR Pass, want to avoid expressway traffic, or are going to Shimoyoshida for the pagoda. See Tokyo to Mt Fuji for every option side by side, and check the Mt Fuji visibility forecast before you book a fixed train.

Questions people ask

How long does the Fuji Excursion take?

Fujikyu gives the fastest downbound run as 1 hour 53 minutes from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko. On the March 2026 timetable the weekday trains take 1 hour 54 to 1 hour 58, and Fujisan Station is five or six minutes earlier. One seasonal weekend train takes 2 hours 13. Coming back, Kawaguchiko to Shinjuku takes two hours to 2 hours 17.

How much is the Fuji Excursion?

Fujikyu Railway lists Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko at ¥4,200 one way: a ¥2,580 basic fare plus a ¥1,620 limited express ticket. Shinjuku to Shimoyoshida is ¥4,010. Fujikyu does not print the fare to Fujisan Station, which falls between the two. Fares checked October 2026. The highway bus to Kawaguchiko is about half the price.

Do you need to reserve the Fuji Excursion?

Fujikyu says the train has no unreserved seats. You can buy a reserved seat ticket for a set train and seat, or a cheaper option Fujikyu calls an unreserved seat ticket, which fixes only the date and section. A reserved seat is the safer choice. Tickets go on sale one month before travel at JR East offices, machines and online.

Can I use the JR Pass on the Fuji Excursion?

Partly. The JR Pass covers Shinjuku to Otsuki, and seat reservations on that part are free. Otsuki to Kawaguchiko is the Fujikyu Railway, a private line, so you pay its fare and charge: ¥1,170 plus ¥600 to Kawaguchiko, or ¥1,100 plus ¥600 to Fujisan Station. That is ¥1,770 or ¥1,700, checked October 2026.

Is Fujisan Station the same as Mt. Fuji Station?

Yes. Fujikyu's English pages call it Mt. Fuji Station, and buses and tickets use Fujisan Station. It is in Fujiyoshida, one stop before Fujikyu Highland and two before Kawaguchiko. The Fuji Excursion stops there, and Fujikyu buses run from it to Oshino Hakkai and Lake Yamanaka, about 30 minutes to Asahigaoka.
